What is Ear Candling (Thermal Auricular)?

Ear candling is a deeply relaxing treatment that involves the use of two ear candles being gently inserted into the outer ear canal and lit at the other end. The heat creates a vortex, chimney-like effect which helps the Eustachian canal and sinuses to open up and drain and causes a small vibrational effect on the ear drum, effectively massaging it.

At Fusion Therapies, we only use BioSun candles which are made from cotton and beeswax with a relaxing honey, sage and chamomile scent. These high quality candles contain an internal filter to prevent any ash from dropping down inside the candle and carry the prestigious CE Mark as they are independently checked for safety.

What happens during a treatment?

After a full medical and lifestyle consultation, we will use an ottoscope to look inside your ears and ensure there are no infections that would prevent the treatment. Next, you will lie down on your side, fully-clothed, on the therapy bed under the covers (or on top if it’s hot). We will wrap a towel around your head to keep your hair away from the candle. We will then insert one end of the ear candle to check for comfort before removing it, lighting it and then re-inserting it. You may hear ‘fizzing’ or ‘crackling’ sounds which are entirely normal and we will be holding and watching the candle at all times. Once the candle has burnt down to the red safety line, we will remove it and extinguish it in water. You will then turn over and the process will be repeated.

Finally, you will turn to lie on your back and we will use your selected Neal’s Yard Remedies Facial Oil (choose from Rose, Frankincense or Neroli) and we will begin a calming pressure point and drainage facial which is perfect for anyone with sinus issues.
